…we should never have taken to the spa before dinner. You won’t feel like moving again, but how to resist the sunken pool, set in a glass-walled bathroom that overlooks the garden with bushland beyond? Allendale Cottage offers romantic weekends or weekday escapes for never more than couples because the accommodation is limited to just two guest cottages, with private balcony and bathrooms with floor to ceiling windows. Nestled in four hectares of historic and very private gardens. Beyond the gardens a forest of Blue Mountain Ash leads to many spectacular walking trails. We booked in for the night at Allendale Cottages…sat on the balcony and were dazzled by the king parrots and crimson rosellas, twilight was different here, the air was thin and pure…then came the darkness you could almost touch, we sat on as if part of it, “isn’t it wonderful?” my wife finally said. We went inside…my wife went to the spectacular bathroom and took some brochures to read while she had a spa bath, poised out over the floodlit bush. Better book a long way ahead, this place is popular. It takes only two couples, lodged in completely separate cottages. Guests are guaranteed absolute privacy, which is why the owners don’t give out the address until the booking’s made. Whether you’re wooing or rekindling passion, or just need a stress-free retreat, you’ll appreciate the peaceful atmosphere. Luxuriate on the private sundeck and enjoy Mother Nature parading in front of you. There are four hectares of gardens and a moving population of parrots, finches and other birds…the cottage is right next to the Blue Mountains National Park, so a bushwalk of some kind is mandatory. That is if you tear yourself away from the two-person sunken spa. One of the owners is also a park ranger, so you’ll get the best advice about seeing the bush. The mountains offer a host of activity options…bushwalking, abseiling, horse riding, trout fishing, golf, antique stalking, café appreciation, gourmandising. Blackheath is home to some top class restaurants and terrific cafes, so dining out isn’t a problem. Perfect place to hide! Feeling bushed, head for Blackheath for a great weekend getaway. Blackheath is perhaps the most attractive town in the Blue Mountains and holidaymakers are starting to wake up to the fact that it is within reach of the popular local tourist spots as well as having plenty of its own. Just a short drive west from Katoomba, Blackheath is fast gaining a reputation for being home of some of the classier hideaways as well as claiming some of the finest restaurants in the region…and as far as scenery goes, the town has some of the best. …we drove the next day in brilliant sunshine to Blackheath, to Allendale Cottages. Set on nine acres of natural gardens (lit at night), and romantically designed for couples. The cottage had a glass-walled full spa overlooking the gardens…from the property, walkers can take the waterfall walk to Govetts Leap and Popes Glen.
